Ceramic Illustration Workshop with Alex Reeder

Learn how to create vibrant, carved ceramic wall hangings from 2D drawings. Join us for a fun and colourful 4-hour Ceramic Illustration workshop from guest artist Alex Reeder, all the way from Vancouver, Canada!

In the first half of this workshop, Alex will demonstrate various methods he’s developed for transferring complex illustrations onto clay. You’ll receive hands-on support every step of the way, tracing through prepared art templates onto clay slabs and carving out the intricate details.

In the second half, Alex will go over mixing underglazes for custom colours, techniques for achieving gradients and shading, and finally an underglaze wash for a crisp line-art effect that evokes an illustrative style. You’ll then be guided through the process of painting your own pieces with the underglazes of your choosing.

The techniques you learn in this workshop can be applied to all manner of clay surfaces and functional forms.

Whether you’re an illustrator who wants to dabble in clay, a ceramicist who wants to experiment with new techniques, or a beginner to both, this playful workshop is open to everyone. A selection of prepared art templates are provided. No previous pottery or art experience necessary!

After the workshop, your pieces will be clear-glazed and fired by Clayground. They will be ready to collect approximately two to three weeks later.

Leave with a one-of-a-kind ceramic artwork ready to hang, and a fresh perspective on the creative possibilities of clay as a drawing surface.

About the artist:
Alex Reeder is a queer artist and ceramicist from Vancouver, Canada, who believes in the healing power of whimsy and clay. Primarily self-taught, he has been working professionally as an illustrator for over a decade. After discovering pottery in 2022 as a therapeutic medium to heal from a combination of trauma and creative burnout, he’s been developing methods to translate comics and illustration into colourful narrative ceramics. He’s now excited to share the techniques he’s learned and hopefully spark the same joy for clay in others!
