Sgraffito Workshop with Sarah Anderson

Join Clayground Berlin as we host Sarah Anderson on one of her stops for The Sgraffito Tour!

Led by expert Sarah Anderson, dive deep into sgraffito techniques to create colourful designs that showcase positive & negative space and depth. Learn the best techniques of applying underglaze colours in your design, as well as tips and tricks to avoid errors during the firing process. Sarah will be here for one night only, so this is your chance to gain expert insight into this technique.

Includes:

  • 3 hours of interactive demonstration and instruction
  • leather-hard clay tiles
  • carving tools
  • images and inspiration – you are welcome to bring your own
  • Various underglazes by Amaco
  • Firing of tiles

While the studio provides tiles, students are welcome to bring their own small to medium-sized leather-hard work (such as a mug, plate, or bowl) if you prefer to decorate a personal form.

All materials, tools, and firings are included. Your finished pieces will be ready for collection in approximately two weeks. You will be notified via email.

All materials, tools, aprons, and glazing services are included. Your pieces will be glazed and fired at our Clayground studio. These will be ready to collect around 2-3 weeks after the workshop.

Cancellations must be made at least 1 week before the workshop for a partial refund (50%). No make-up courses will be offered.

About the artist

Sarah Anderson is a full-time ceramic artist who creates illustrative characters on the surface of clay using the sgraffito technique. Bright colors and exaggerated creatures are prominent features in her work, helping to establish a uniquely identifiable brand. She graduated from Ball State University with a degree in sculpture, working in multiple mediums to create large-scale pieces.

Sarah served as the ceramics department chair at the Indianapolis Art Center for three years before leaving to pursue her own practice full time. Her work has been exhibited nationwide in numerous galleries and studios, earning recognition such as Best Teapot at the Strictly Functional Pottery National at the Lancaster Museum in Pennsylvania (2021).

She has been featured in several publications, including Ceramics Monthly and Indianapolis Monthly. Most recently, she has collaborated with nationally recognized brands such as Diamond Core Tools and AMACO, and was a demonstrating artist at NCECA.
