3-Week Beginner Pottery Wheel Course – Make Your Own Coffee Cups at Clayground Studio

In this 3-week beginner wheel-throwing course in Berlin, you’ll learn to create your own handmade coffee cups and decorate them with engobes and the sgraffito technique.

This short introductory ceramics course is perfect for complete beginners who want a focused, hands-on introduction to working with clay on the potter’s wheel.

Our resident wheel master, Clara Jereczek, will guide you step-by-step through the fundamentals of wheel throwing in a small group setting at Clayground Studio in Berlin-Friedrichshain.


What You’ll Learn in This Pottery Course

Over three weekly sessions, you’ll learn:

  • How to properly prepare and wedge clay

  • Centering techniques for confident wheel throwing

  • Pulling walls evenly to create balanced forms

  • Shaping coffee cups and espresso cups

  • Trimming and refining your pieces

  • Attaching handles (time permitting)

  • Decorating with coloured engobes

  • The sgraffito carving technique

You’ll gain a strong technical foundation in wheel throwing while creating beautiful functional ceramics.


Course Schedule

Monday Evenings | 18:00–20:00

13th April
Preparing clay, centering, pulling, and throwing cup forms, including coffee cups and espresso cups.

20th April
Trimming your selected pieces. If time allows, you’ll attach handles.

27th April
Surface decoration using engobes, underglazes, and the sgraffito method. Students are welcome to bring in patterns and ideas for surface design with them.

After the final session, we glaze your pieces with a transparent glaze and fire them in our kiln.

🕊 Finished pieces will be ready for collection 2–3 weeks later.
