Firing pieces in our kilns

Yes! We offer an external firing service for those potters who work from home. Please note that we can only accept clay that fires to cone 6 or 1240 degrees Celsius. We do not offer firing services for lower temperatures unless you have enough items to fill a full kiln. In this case, please contact us for more information and available firing dates. Please inform us of the type of clay and any glazes that you are preparing to use.

If you have many pieces and didn’t buy a Clay Kit via Labels, you can rent a kiln. See details in the next FAQ question below.

Firing Service Instructions

We have two studio kilns.

  • Rohde TE 200 S large kiln, Interior: 60 cm width, 65 cm height: €190 for each kiln firing, bisque, or glaze (full round of bisque and glaze firing = €300 total)
  • Rohde TE 130 S medium kiln, interior 60cm width by 40cm height: €150 for each kiln firing, bisque, or glaze (full round of bisque and glaze firing = €380 total)

You will need to book a rental time at least 1 month in advance so that we can schedule it around other studio kiln firings.

Contact us at hey@claygroundceramics.com or click the button below.

When you contact us, you must tell us the following details about the kiln firing you need:

  • Clay type (stoneware, earthenware)
  • Clay temperature range (listed on your bag of clay)
  • Preferred bisque temperature (we tend to fire to 950 degrees celsius)
  • Preferred glaze firing temperature (if renting for a glaze firing)
  • Manufacturer and name of glaze used (if renting for a glaze firing)

Please note that we will send you an invoice for kiln rentals.

Rent a Kiln

That’s difficult to say! Everyone’s pieces are a little different. But the dimensions inside our medium kiln are about 60 by 60 by 40cm.

We recommend that you measure your pieces and do a rough calculation to determine how much space all of your items would take. If you have a very large piece that is more than 40cm tall, you will likely not be able to have a shelf below this item.

Memberships & Workshops

When you apply, you should receive a quick response almost immediately letting you know that we have received your application and that you’re on the waitlist. We are typically full, but we email a few people when we have available spots – both short-term and long-term. We’ll simply let you know when we have a spot to offer 🙂

It’s possible that you won’t hear back from us for a long time, or even ever. We are very particular about the people we offer memberships to. We have a very wide range of people – of many backgrounds, languages, and ceramic work styles – but we aim to find new members who fit our existing community well. A few more details on this are below.

The potential member we are looking for:

  • Adds something new to our community – in terms of culture, ceramic style, work background or experiences in life!
  • Offers openness to helping others in the community, not just expecting to personally benefit from the studio
  • Writes a complete application – no one-sentence answers. Give us a solid picture of yourself and your pottery. Tell us why you would be a valuable addition to our crew.
  • They are humble about their work, open to learning, and grateful for having ceramics in their life!

Every human is unique. But all of our members share the above characteristics and attitudes. This is part of what makes our community such a pleasure and an enriching crew to be a part of, and we do our best to keep it that way.

No. We specifically designed the studio to be a community space, where everyone shares our equipment. We don’t have the space to accommodate custom requests and additional equipment from outside. The joy and simplicity of joining a community studio is that you can show up and use the equipment there, without having to invest in and maintain them yourself!

We do however encourage people to bring their small tools, like trimming and sculpting tools and anything special one might need for their own glaze techniques. As a general rule, small tools can be brought by each member, but large equipment may not be brought to the studio.

Shopping Ceramics

Right now, we have most of our members listed on our website here, so that you can check out their portfolios or Instagram accounts, and contact them directly if you like their works.

We are not an official shop – so we do not have fixed opening hours. If members are in, the studio is open to visitors and you are welcome to pop in and view the ceramics on sale. The best way to shop for ceramics is to check our Instagram page and follow the ones whose work you like! They’re all lovely, friendly people and would love to get a direct message from you with interest in their works.
