Member’s Guide

Beloved Clayground Member

This is where we hopefully answer the questions that come up as you work at Clayground

This page is for current members of the studio. It’s a shortlist of answers is based on the questions we get most often as people are getting into the flow in the space.

If your question isn’t answered here, it’s probably in the full Terms & Conditions document, which you’ll find here.

Kiln firings

Bisque is fired to 950 degrees celsius.

Glaze is fired to 1240 degrees.

This temperature is “Cone 6.” It is in the mid-fire range for stoneware.

Yes, but we will not do this very consistently.

We will communally plan low-fire kilns (such as a glaze kiln at 1150 degrees) when a few members have enough low-fire pieces to fill at least our smaller kiln.

We are not prioritizing Porcelain in this studio – we are a Stoneware studio. Once in a while though, we may organise a higher temperature firing, but will not make this a regular practice. Higher temperatures will be charged at a higher rate.

We are starting to plan in 1 bisque and 1 glaze kiln per week. We are firing the kilns on the following weekly schedule:

Monday evenings: Bisque kiln

Thursday evenings: Glaze kiln

IMPORTANT: For all glaze work, you must finish your glazing by Wednesday evening at the latest. The pieces must dry overnight. Any wet or damp pieces may explode in the kiln.

All your fully-dried pieces that are ready for the kiln go on the shelves in the hall or glaze room. We try to do our best to get a few pieces from every member into the kiln each time we fire. If you have high-priority pieces that you need to be done as soon as possible, please leave a little note paper next to your priority clay pieces on the kiln shelves. That helps us make sure your pieces are done when you need them. We cannot guarantee that odd shaped items will go in every time.

The following prices are for members only. If you know a non-member who wants to rent a kiln for their work, please send them to the FAQ’s page.

Medium kiln (100 L): €70 / kiln load (bisque and low-fire glaze only)

Large kiln (200 L): €120 / kiln load (same for bisque or glaze)

We aim to invoice by the 15th of the following month. So for all of your work that was fired in January, you would get an invoice from us around 15 February. We are very often a few days late 🙂

Kiln firing costs and studio clay (if used) are invoiced together.

Yes. Clayground is a place for experimenting. But we do have to protect our kiln from damage.

If you want to fire a glaze that you don’t have experience with:

  • Make a test tile first
  • Make sure the glaze can be fired up to 1230 degrees or higher
  • Let us know that it’s a new/experimental glaze so we can also give it a little more space in the kiln.
  • Create your own cookies to place under the test piece and place the cookie under the item on the ‘glaze shelf’ prior to firing

Studio storage & materials

Part-time members may NOT store packing supplies at the studio. We don’t have space for even half of our members to store packaging supplies, The space we have needs to be reserved for your actual works in progress or kiln-ready pieces.

Extra storage is being made available in the cellar. This will be added to your ‘Firing invoices’

If you are regularly selling works that you have on display at the studio, please take responsibility for planning and bringing the packaging supplies with you from home each time you pack an order.

Yes! For those who dare to carefully climb up the ladder and store your extra work in progress on the highest shelves, you are welcome to do so. Please do not leave your items on the shelves for longer than necessary. This space should be shared amongst all members.

Yes. You will at least need to get a small-ish box or bowl for keeping your tools and materials contained. There are extra buckets that can be used for clay recycling. Please ask a member of the staff.

Depending on how you work, you may need sandpaper, buckets, special trimming or sculpting tools, a personal towel, and so on.

We highly recommend that all members get a dust mask if they are mixing their glazes. Please remember to LABEL your tools.

Workshops & events

We have a public calendar for you all that shows when we are running workshops at the studio. Check the link below anytime you want the latest schedule of events for the current month –

Studio Calendar

Yes. We charge €80 per workshop to members if you want to host a workshop in the ‘shop’ room. You must provide all materials required for the workshop (glaze, clay, etc), but we will help co-promote with you to help make it a success!

We do not allow wheel workshops at this time, but you may use the front room for hand-building workshops, glaze demos, etc.

If you have an idea, please present it to us with the following information:

  • Workshop concept/topic
  • Maximum # workshop attendees
  • Space required for the workshop (ex: do you need to be in the kitchen a lot, as well as in the front room?)
  • Proposed dates (give us a few options) – at least 1 month in advance

Visitors at the Studio

Yes. You may invite your clients to visit the studio so you can sell some more pieces 🎁

Please be as considerate as possible of other members when people are visiting though. Please first check the schedule and ideally invite your visitors over when there are fewer members working.

That’s fine as long as he/she/they are not in the way of members’ space to work. If it’s a more crowded time, it’s best not to invite non-members since we reserve the space for members to work in peace. Use common sense and remain considerate of other members. 🙂

Yes, we charge €20/hour for use of the studio. Please inform us and book at least 1 month in advance

Studio operations

We don’t have any specific restrictions, but ask you to use a reasonable amount. We do not expect you to use our white studio glaze on all of your pieces each month, for example.

Yes! Please just send us the photo and the description to hey@claygroundceramics.com with email subject line: “Member Page info.”

You can pause your membership 1 time for one full month each year without losing your membership spot. For that month you don’t have to pay any membership fee.

We will ask if your space can be sublet during this month. If so, your items will be carefully stored, at no extra charge, downstairs in the cellar. Once the term is up, you can restore your items to your shelf.

We have a limit of 3 members pausing in the same month. If you know you will be gone for 1 month this year, let us know as soon as possible to reserve that month’s pause for yourself.

Ending your membership & leaving

If you’re leaving Clayground, here’s what you’ll need to know:

  1. Clean off your personal member shelves (the works in progress shelves) by the last day of the last month you are a member. This is a strict policy! We will have new members joining from the 1st of the next month, and they need the shelves
  2. Clean off your shop shelf the following week (1st week of next month) at the latest.
  3. Remove all other supplies you have kept at the studio the following week (1st week of next month) as well.

Yes! This is still possible. Here’s how it works:

  • Let us know that you are coming back to finish your work
  • We charge a former-member drop-in rate of €10/hour for using the studio
  • We charge a special kiln firing fee for former members: €5/kg (vs €7/kg for everyone else)
  • Please try to come to the studio during the hours when we are there: Monday / Thursday, hours 17:00 – 19:30. Contact us if this isn’t possible.
  • We will fire your final pieces and send you an invoice for firing costs and hours spent at the studio
