The Clay Kit

This clay kit is the perfect way to keep calm during the pandemic and learn something new at home! Making things with our clay kit is pretty intuitive. Roll out pieces with your hands to make handles, carve into it to create a textured surface, or simply pinch from the center out until a cup appears. In Product Details, you’ll find a link to our partner’s tutorials just in case you need help deciding where to start.

Please note that this kit includes clay and tools, but the costs of firing/glazing are extra if you want to finish and save any pieces you make.

If you want to bring your pieces back to us for firing in the kiln, please follow the instructions below:

1. Scratch/carve your name or initials into the bottom of each clay item

You must carve into the clay on the bottom of all your pieces with your initials so you’ll recognize them at pick-up. We will not take pieces that are not marked. Please note that marking with a pencil or marker will not last through the firing process! The pieces must be scratched/carved on the bottom.

2. Scratch/carve the number of the glaze you want on that piece into the bottom of each piece

You must mark the number of the glaze on the bottom of each individual piece you bring to us. For example. if you want Pine Green glaze on one piece, it must have your initials and #1 on the bottom

  1. Pine Green glaze
  2. Tide Line glaze
  3. Sea Breeze glaze
  4. Desert glaze
  5. Unglazed (not pictured) – we can fire your piece with no glaze. This is best for sculptural pieces, since your piece will not be waterproof.

3. Fill out the drop-off sheet

If you live in Berlin and ordered after 1st March 2021, you will have received this drop-off form in your clay or Clay Kit package.

If a drop-off form did not arrive with your clay kit, please download and print it via the link here: DROP OFF FORM

In case you don’t have a ruler at home, we’ve added one to the bottom of the sheet! When printing, you must specify ‘scale: 100%’ in your printer setting dialog if you want to use the ruler at the bottom of the sheet to measure your pieces.

We will not accept pieces without a completed drop-off form and cash payment with them.

4. Calculate the cost of firing your pieces

The Drop-off sheet enables you to see exactly how much you will pay for firing and glazing your pieces at Clayground. You must calculate this and bring the right amount of cash when you drop off.

What does this cost cover?

We fire the pieces 2 times in the kiln, and glaze each of your pieces – the price per item covers the full process of completing your pieces.

5. Bring your pieces to Clayground during drop-off times

You may drop off your pieces each week at the following times:

Monday 5:30pm – 7:00pm

Friday 5:30pm – 6:30pm

  • You’ll knock on the front door, wearing a mask
  • You’ll hand us a bag or box of your pieces
  • You’ll hand us your Drop Off Form
  • You’ll hand us cash in the amount calculated on the form

6. Come back in a few weeks to pick up your lovely pieces!

Our typical turn-around times to complete dropped-off pieces are as follows:

  • 3 weeks from dropping off to pick-up finished items
  • Pick-up times are the same as the drop-off times!

At this time, items made with clay bought elsewhere will typically not be accepted for firing due to the high volume of pieces we receive.
