Figurative ceramic sculpture workshop with Nastja Calaca

2-Day Sculpture Workshop

Clayground is excited to announce a workshop led by Nastja Calaca

Workshop Description:

Create whimsical and extraordinary creatures from clay. In this two-day hand-building workshop, you will design and build a standing ceramic character from scratch. Working entirely by hand—without molds or machinery—you’ll explore sculptural techniques that allow expressive, one-of-a-kind forms to emerge naturally from the clay. The focus of the course is on character, stylization, and storytelling. Through guided demonstrations, you’ll learn how a simple sketch or a random animal reference can evolve into a unique creature with personality, emotion, and presence. You’ll gain insight into my personal approach to stylization and how small decisions in form, posture, and detail can completely transform a sculpture. This workshop is ideal for participants who want to work on larger sculptural forms and develop a distinctive visual language. Basic handbuilding skills are sufficient

Details:

  • Date: 9th – 10th May
  • Time: 10:00 – 19:00 (lunch break 13:00)
  • Location: Clayground Berlin, Danneckerstr. 7, 10245 Berlin

Structure

  • Saturday 9th May · 10:00–19:00 (lunch break at 13:00) The first day is dedicated to building the main structure of your sculpture. You will work on the torso, head, arms, and legs, focusing on balance, proportions, and gesture. Step by step, your character will take shape as a solid, standing form.
  • Sunday 10th May · 10:00–19:00 The second day focuses on refining details and adding clothing or accessories that enhance the character’s story. After a lunch break, Nastja will demonstrate painting and decorating techniques on a bisque-fired piece. You will gain tips on painting and decorating your own work independently, following bisque firing, applying what you’ve learned from the workshop.

Participants will:

  • Build a standing ceramic sculpture from scratch using handbuilding techniques only

  • Develop ideas through sketching and stylisation

  • Construct a balanced, self-supporting form with strong proportions and gesture

  • Sculpt the torso, head, arms, and legs step by step

  • Refine surface details and add clothing or accessories to enhance storytelling

  • Learn painting and decorating techniques for bisque-fired pieces

  • Gain the confidence to finish and decorate sculptures independently after firing

In addition to acquiring technical skills, participants will leave the workshop with the confidence to approach future projects independently, armed with a thorough understanding of the complexities involved in sculpture work.

What’s included:

  • All instructions, clay, tools, and aprons
  • Lunch (a vegetarian lunch will be provided at the studio)
  • Tea/coffee

What’s not included:

  • If students wish to fire their pieces, a charge will be applied by the studio. Please email us at hey@claygroundceramics.com to find out more

Bio

Nastja Calaca always dreamed of becoming an illustrator—creating stories, reinventing characters, and building imaginary worlds on paper. Her path unexpectedly led her to ceramics, and what began as a chance encounter grew into a lasting devotion. In a high-tech world of screens and plastic, working with clay offers her a sense of playful freedom and childlike joy—an honest, tactile process rooted in curiosity and imagination. Her ceramic characters begin as illustrations and slowly take shape as teapots, plant pots, and small sculptural figures. Each piece is hand-built and unique, shaped by intuition, careful glazing, and the unpredictable magic of the kiln. These whimsical beings travel far, finding homes across the world, and each one carries its own story—waiting to become part of someone’s everyday life.
