Introduction to wheel throwing – February – Mondays

In this shorter 3-week introductory wheel course, you’ll learn to make cups and bowls and glaze them to finish your first two ceramic pieces.

This course, taught by our resident wheel master, Tiziana, will introduce you to wheel-throwing. It’s best suited to beginners who want a quick introduction to working with clay on the potter’s wheel. We’ll meet at the studio once per week for three sessions—see the schedule below.

Before booking, please read all details below about canceled bookings, and missing a class!

Here’s what we’ll do in this wheel course:

  • 3rd February: Preparing clay, centering, pulling, and throwing simple forms like cups
  • 10th February: Trimming the two pieces that you selected to keep from last week, and continued wheel-throwing practice
  • 17th February: We will skip this weekend whilst your items are fired to the bisque stage
  • 24th February: Learn how to glaze your pieces with good technique
  • We then fire your pieces in the second kiln after glazing them to finish them
  • You’ll pick up your pieces 2 weeks later

You’ll also learn a whole bunch of wheel-throwing techniques and skills:

  • Good technique for centering the clay to prep for efficient wheel-throwing
  • How to form the base of your piece so you don’t run into wobbly problems when making your pieces!
  • How to position your body and hands for pulling the clay straight up
  • How to trim your piece and know when it’s dry enough to trim
  • How to make a bottom ring for detail, make it more delicate, or carve a pattern!

Cancellations

Cancellations must be made at least 7 days before the course starts for a full refund. No refunds will be given when cancellations are made after this date. Students must attend all SCHEDULED class times. If a student misses a session, NO MAKE-UP CLASSES will be offered.
