Introduction to wheel throwing – January – Saturdays

Start the new year with a new skill! In this shorter 3-week introductory wheel course, you’ll learn to make cups and bowls and glaze them to finish your first two ceramic pieces.

Our resident wheel master, Tiziana, will give you an introduction to wheel-throwing in this course. It’s best suited to beginners looking for a quick first introduction to working with clay on the potter’s wheel. We’ll meet at the studio once per week for three sessions – see the schedule below.

Before booking, please read all details below regarding canceled bookings and missing classes.

Here’s what we’ll do in this wheel course:

  • 10th January: Preparing clay, centering, pulling, and throwing simple forms like cups
  • 17th January: Trimming the pieces that you selected to keep from last week, attaching handles
  • 24th January: We will skip these weekends while your items are fired to the bisque stage
  • 31st January: Learn how to glaze your pieces with good technique
  • We then fire your pieces in the second kiln after glazing them to finish them
  • You’ll pick up your pieces 2 weeks later

You’ll also learn a whole bunch of wheel-throwing techniques and skills:

  • Good technique for centering the clay to prep for efficient wheel-throwing
  • How to form the base of your piece so you don’t run into wobbly problems when making your pieces!
  • How to position your body and hands for pulling the clay straight up
  • How to trim your piece and know when it’s dry enough to trim
  • How to make a bottom ring for detail, make it more delicate, or carve a pattern!

Cancellations

Cancellations must be made at least 7 days before the course starts for a full refund. No refunds will be given when cancellations are made after this date. Students must attend all SCHEDULED class times. If a student misses a session, NO MAKE-UP CLASSES will be offered.
