Rainbow bowls: wheel throwing with coloured clay (March)

In this 3-week wheel course, you’ll learn how to create colourful bowls using the technique of nerikomi on the pottery wheel

🌈 Embrace the Magic of Coloured Clay 🌈

Join us on this artistic journey and let your creativity flow freely. Whether you’re a seasoned potter or a curious beginner, we encourage you to give this workshop a go. Share your ideas, experiments, and triumphs with coloured stoneware and porcelain. Our resident wheel master, Tiziana, will give you an introduction to this particular technique.

We’ll meet at the studio once per week for three sessions – see the schedule below.

Before booking, please read all the details below about cancelled bookings and missing a class!

Here’s what we’ll do in this wheel course:

  • 8th March: Learn how to add color to your clays and combine and wedge different colors of clay. We will focus on throwing medium-sized bowls or cups
  • 15th March: Trimming the two pieces that you selected to keep from last week
  • 22nd March: We will skip this weekend whilst your items are fired to the bisque stage
  • 29th March: Learn how to glaze your pieces with good technique – for the colours to stand out, we will apply a transparent glaze as well as colored glazes to add more contrast and bring out the bright shades of the pigmented clay.
  • We then fire your pieces for you in the second kiln after glazing them to finish them
  • You will be able to pick up your finished, colourful pieces 2 weeks later

You’ll also learn a whole bunch of wheel-throwing techniques and skills:

  • A good technique for centering the clay to prep for efficient wheel-throwing
  • How to form the base of your piece so you don’t run into wobbly problems when making your pieces!
  • How to add pigments to your clay as well as how to choose between various types of clay
  • How to trim your piece to increase the contrast between the various shades of clay and know when it’s dry enough to trim
  • How to create and attach a handle to your mug
