Learn the traditional Korean moon jar in this 3-day ceramic workshop in Berlin. Guided by Korean potter Jung Hong, focusing on throwing, joining, and refining form.
Day 1
Introduction to spiral wedging and the art of throwing large fruit bowls on the wheel. Participants will begin by throwing the two separate halves of the moon jar. The aim is to create a medium-sized vase. Jung will demonstrate his approach, with a strong focus on centering, pulling even walls, and carefully altering the shape to achieve balanced, compatible forms.
Day 2
Learn techniques for crack-free joining and achieving seamless seams.
Once the pieces have stiffened, the session will focus on joining the two halves. Jung will guide students through proper sticking techniques, how to avoid cracks and common mishaps, and how to refine the neck. There will also be discussion around the characteristic curve and the presence of a well-made moon jar.
Day 3
Turn your moon jar the traditional Korean way and perfect its foot. On the final day, students will learn how to turn and refine their moon jars, adjusting proportions and surface details to strengthen the overall form. Finished pieces will be prepared for bisque firing.
Glazing and glaze firing are not included. Students who wish to glaze their pieces can join a glazing workshop with Tiziana, held at the end of each wheel-throwing course. Please contact hey@claygroundceramics.com directly for details (€60 per person).
